Hi,
I may end up getting a new laptop for work. But it'll probably stay at work. So, I'll need one for home use. I'm considering getting a netbook, as they seem really portable. Does anyone know what specs I need to look for in a model that Jaws 11 or 12 would be compatible with? Also, I ordered updates for Jfw 10-12 a couple years ago. I haven't installed the latest version (I think it's 12) on any computers. Do I need to install the previous versions of Jfw for version 12 to work? All this is confusing. I'm starting a case management internship and want to make all this tech stuff work as seamlessly as possible. I'd like a dell netbook, can anyone recommend a good version with Jaws? Oh, how many times can a Jaws program be loaded. Is the license good for only one computer? If so, how do I get a second license so it'll run at work and at home?
Thanks, this is all pretty overwhelming!
It certainly can be overwhelming.
You can install Jaws on up to three computers of your own.
If something happens to those computers, you can call FreedomScientific and ask them for a "reset of your jaws authorization count".
As for Jaws versions, you need only install Jaws 12, and you will be good to go.
I have not used a Netbook wit Windows7 as of yet, but if that is an option, I believe that Windows7 would be the operating system to start out on.
I will let others, who are more qualified, answer the questions about models and hardware specifications.
hmm I have used a win7 laptop I would not go less then 2 gigs but fore the starter addition it will run on one gig. Now fore del hmm... not sure if you want to go with that type of netbook. I would rffer a person to asus because of its super hybrid engine software that will over clock your machine a little faster then you normally would have your processor. Fore other computer lovers yes! its safe comes installed on your machine. Now I did do something crazy but it was over board. I had comp USA put a 750 gig in my netbook + another gig of ram which equals out to 2 gigs.
What I might do for now is to use my older laptop for home use and a newer one for work. I'll be dealing with really confidential stuff at work with lots of databases. I don't want any security breaches. Otherwise, I'd just use the laptop I have. It still works okay. Thanks for your answers so far. They've been really helpful.
Just remember that a Netbook processor is basically a glorified mobile processor. What that means in normalspeak, is it's a step up from the processors in your mobile phone and the like. It's not a scaled-down standard PC processor, it's a scaled-up mobile one.
All that to say, if you're going to want to use Office and other big processor-intensive software, get a laptop instead. Not that much more expensive and are often dual or quad-core (two to four processors in one).
The Netbook was designed then to do what the iPad does now, only less: Just check email at Starbucks, maybe surf the net, etc. Naturally people push the envelope and start installing all sorts of things like Office on it, but just remember: Scaled-up phone processor, not scaled-down PC processor. Differences abound between the two which don't necessarily work in your favor.
You could consider a Mac for home, I don't know if you live by yourself but if the computer gets stuck you always have VoiceOver. And Macs open every file type now. Happens all the time now in the Coast Guard. The Mac hardware is very good hardware: none of that 6100 Motorola crap anymore. It'll cost you a bit more, but if you find one on eBay that's used, yu'll be able to get more life out of it with less tinkering, than you would a Windows machine.
Dell's Mini 10 is a good choice, but it comes with starter. As said here Windows 7 works better with 2 BG of ram, and most netbooks are coming with only one. However the starter will work fine with 1 and your Jaws. If size is not to much of a factor I'd go fore a regular laptop, because prices have dropped, and equipping a netbook with more ram and all from the factory is going to run close in price. I have the one I'm suggestiong, but mine is tricked out, so. If I were buying today I'd go for a regular laptop, and do some shopping. At 350 to 399 it will have a better processor, 2 GB of ram, and you'll get a disc drive, so that will make installing Jaws simpler for you if you are doing it on your one. Sure a bet larger, but it's not much heavier, or not were you'll notice.
Thanks, I was gonna ask about a 2 G laptop. I'm wanting to keep this relatively cheap for my Division of Vocational Rehabilitation office. Obviously for work, I'd need a laptop rather than a netbook. But I may invest in a netbook later, cause they're so cute. I wouldn't need to really do any word processing at home. Too bad you can't buy one by making installment payments. I'm sure you could through Dell. My laptop is Dell. Are the same issues with Dell laptops as with Netbooks? If so, this is news to me, cause I've never had any real issues, and the laptop I have now I've had for about 3 and a half years.
I've not had any issues with my Dell Mini 10, but a Dell is a Dell and you can get the exact same service from the company no matter what you buy. It will have the same keyboard you are use to using as well, just smaller. You can do with it anything you like, it's just a laptop, with lower power, and no disc drive is all. I like other posters agree that 2 GB is better for running Windows 7 home, but if you stay with starter then for basic task it will work just finewith 1 GB. You'll need to have Jaws downloaded, or you have to put it on a flash drive to install it, but otherwise it's no problem. It will have 3 USB ports and a card slot, a wireless card and a cable jack for conecting it wired to your modem. It also will have a mic and headset jack and a monitor out port for adding a second monitor if you desire, so pretty neat actually, just slow in its regular form, but not really slow if that makes sense. Mine runs Windows 7 professional, and has 2 GB memory running at 800 GHZ, so works great, but it cost me almost 400 or more to get it that way, so if I were spending 400 now I'd just get a laptop. Enjoy it when you get it.
I will finish my last post fore this subject, I love my netbook!.
Me too. It's just "cute" Lol Asus has great colors too. I belive that was the brand you have?
Okay thanks
Yes I have an asus :).
Hey to the poster who started this board did you ever get your netbook?
